Original Charcoal Portraits

LEADERS OF ART & GLOBAL HEALTH CENTER AFRICA (ARTGLO)

This charcoal portrait series honors a few of the visionary leaders at the Art & Global Health Center Africa (ArtGlo), sketched during quiet weekends in Zomba, Malawi. ArtGlo uses the arts to spark dialogue and drive social change across health, human rights, and environmental justice.

Leaders of Art & Global Health Center Africa (ArtGlo)

Rodger Phiri is the Executive Director of Art and Global Health Center Africa (ArtGlo), a leader committed to advancing social inclusion and driving impactful social development initiatives in Malawi.

I am inspired by what Desmond Tutu said: 'Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.'"

Lekodi Magombo has been a Senior Program Manager at the Art & Global Health Center for over 7 years. Lekodi is a Project Manager based in Malawi, with experience developing and implementing community health and development projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Bible, 1 Corinthians 10:24, “Let each one keep seeking, not his own advantage, but that of the other person.”

Florence Simbota is a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at Art & Global Health Center Africa. She is also pursuing a PhD in rural development, focusing on local knowledge systems and their impact on livelihoods.

Art is a universal language that allows expression of emotions, thoughts, and experience. Global health reminds me that the well-being of one person affects the well-being of others.

Raffick Poison is a Social Inclusion and Diversity (SID) Program Support at Art & Global Health Center Africa. He is a social worker and human rights activist who uses participatory arts and inclusive methods to support vulnerable communities.

“How you do anything; is how you do everything”

Chisomo Liwimbi is a Social Inclusion and Diversity (SID) lead at the Art & Global Health Center Africa (ArtGlo). Chisomo Liwimbi is a passionate advocate for equality, inclusion, and human rights who joined ArtGlo in 2018 and now leads its Social Inclusion and Diversity Programme.

Umunthu believes in a universal bond that connects all humanity, "I am because we are".

Binuel Phale is a Youth & Community Engagement Programme Assistant at the ArtGlo. He is a community development practitioner, researcher, and advocate for human and environmental rights.

Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

As I blended charcoal with my fingertips and shaped shadows with a kneaded eraser, I found each face illuminated by its own balance of light and dark. These portraits capture the quiet power and ambition of my colleagues, each drawn in a dream-like gaze—focused, forward, and full of hope.
